Silt mail carriers moving to Rifle

Four weeks from now the Silt Post Office will undergo some major changes. According to Acting Postmaster Matt Curry, all of Silt’s mail will be sorted in Rifle. The Silt Post Office currently has three mail carriers. They will be working out of the Rifle Post Office instead of Silt.

For Silt residents, it means mail delivery will be a little later than usual. Curry said, “Post Office box holders should not expect mail in their boxes before noon.”

Does this mean the Silt Post Office will be closing soon?

No.

In June, the US Postal Service proposed closing 11 offices in Colorado. “Silt is not on any target list,” said Curry who has been acting postmaster in Silt for the past month. “That’s all we know for now. And that’s good news.”

In a statement on the website, the USPS claims customers are “choosing to conduct their postal business online, on their smart phone and at their shopping destinations. And that means the need for us to maintain nearly 32,000 retail offices has diminished.”

They are “studying approximately 3,700 retail offices to determine customer needs. As part of this study, we are introducing a retail-replacement option –– Village Post Offices –– as an option for affected communities.

“Village Post Offices would be operated by local businesses, such as pharmacies, grocery stores and other appropriate retailers, and would offer popular postal products and services such as stamps and flat-rate packaging.”

The Silt office is not on the Expanded Access study list for Colorado.
