BOCC approves WEMUC grant

September 21, 2011

Colorado, Garfield County

On Monday, September 19, the Garfield County BOCC approved a $3,000 funding grant to the West Elk Multi-Use Club (WEMUC) for trail maintenance and operations expenses for the upcoming 2011/2012 ski season.

“Simply put, this is a fantastic recreational trail system and it would not exist without funding from Garfield County,”  said Tod Tibbetts, executive director of WEMUC. “We appreciate the BOCC’s continued support and their recognition of the economic benefits of recreational trails for our local citizens and communities.”

WEMUC operates the trail system in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service-Rifle Ranger District with the assistance of Kyle Grambley, recreation specialist. “The  Club has always enjoyed a great partnership with the Forest Service. With Kyle’s help in organizing trail maintenance this year, we will be able to open up more mountain biking and horsebacking riding trails next summer. ”

At Monday’s BOCC meeting, Tibbetts and Grambley discussed future plans for West Elk trails:  Group aims to promote trail system off Buford Road.

The article states in error: “The WEMUC also gets donations from municipalities throughout Garfield County, and from private donations”.  According to Tibbetts, WEMUC operates on a $4,000 annual budget, which is funded by a $3,000 grant from Garfield County and approximately $1,000 in donations from trail users.

“The Club currently receives no funding from municipalities,” Tibbetts said. “The majority of West Elk trail users are from Silt, Rifle, New Castle, Glenwood Springs, and Carbondale. We would certainly welcome donations from those  municipalities.”
