Colorado, oil and gas drilling

The following Letter to the Editor by John C. Lamb* appeared recently in the Boulder Daily Camera and Longmont Times-Call.

Don’t rely on establishment to protect you from fracking

Recently, I sent out a request on an Erie website for people to share their stories about living with fracking in their neighborhoods. I received over 30 gut-wrenching stories that described what people are going through. You can read Nightmares From Erie here. It is terrible what they have put up with!

These testimonials bring home the reality of what fracking does to a community, what it does to its children and their parents, and what it does to its air, water, and land. This is what is coming to Lafayette, Boulder, and all of Boulder County. Read them and know that you are next.

I demand that our so-called leaders read Nightmares. This is what our governor, representatives, and senators have failed to protect us from. Boulder County Commissioners Elise Jones, Deb Gardner and Cindy Domenico and Lafayette Mayor Christine Berg, why aren’t you standing up — regardless of your political careers and risk of being sued because of immoral laws — and saying, “Enough is enough. We won’t allow the poisoning of our families. You can’t frack here.” Why, Boulder Valley School District, did you sell out the children (Meadowlark Elementary), knowing the grave health and safety (Firestone) risks?

We can stop fracking in Boulder County but it won’t be done through the established political system or the Democratic or Republican parties, or the COGCC, or the courts, or the Sierra Club. We can stop it if we all come together and do direct actions, including, but not limited to, civil disobedience, picketing, walk-outs, boycotts, marches, encampments (Standing Rock), guerilla theater, mic checks at meetings, flash mobs, occupying offices, and bannering. The time is now. We have the right to a healthy climate!
