EcoWatch –– Colorado Groups Demand Access To Gov. Hickenlooper’s Secret Fracking Meetings

Meetings May Violate Colorado Sunshine Law

Denver, CO — Today, 11 citizens groups that helped lead local anti-fracking initiatives and represent communities that have been impacted by fracking demand that Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper allow them access to the meetings he is holding about a potential special legislative session addressing fracking. The meetings have been widely reported in Colorado newspapers, most recently in the Denver Post and Denver Business Journal, in which reporters have stated that oil and gas industry executives and other stakeholders have been in attendance. But none of the citizen and environmental groups that actually moved the moratoriums and bans forward in the last 18 months — in six cities with over 400,000 citizens including Fort Collins, Loveland (pending), Longmont, Boulder, Broomfield, and Lafayette — have even known about the meetings, let alone been invited to attend. The groups believe that Hickenlooper’s meetings may violate Colorado Sunshine Law which requires public notice of meetings as well as public access, and that Hickenlooper may be trying to subvert public process and citizen input by reverting to closed-door “smoke filled rooms” with industry executives.
