SourceGas reports spill in Thompson Divide area

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — The SourceGas natural gas supply company reported on June 27 that a spill of unknown dimensions had occurred in the natural-gas storage complex known as the Wolf Creek Field, located in the Thompson Divide area southwest of Glenwood Springs.

The spill was reported by SourceGas on June 20, but apparently had taken place over time, beginning earlier than the date it was found.

And according to a spill report on the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) website, the spill is believed to have had an “impact” on groundwater flowing at a depth of five to six feet underground at the site.

There was no elaboration regarding what kind of impact might have occurred or what chemicals might be involved.

The Thompson Divide region has become a magnet for controversy about drilling for natural gas …

Here’s the spill report:  RMNG FORM 19 WOLF CREEK UNIT #12

The operator is listed as Rocky Mountain Natural Gas, LLC. They are a subsidiary of SourceGas, LLC.

The cause of the spill is described as an “historical release,” which means the company believes it is not a new or ongoing leak or spill. They believe that the contamination is leftover from a previous spill. The status of the well is listed as “Active Well — used for storage or monitoring does not require monthly reporting.”  More information on the location of the spill:  Wolf Creek Storage Area Fact Sheet
