Yotta Know Nominees – Part 1: Sally Jewell

Yotta Know Nominees – or YKN – is my three-part series focusing on President Obama’s recent nominations to key positions in his Cabinet and the federal government. On February 6, REI Chief Executive Sally Jewell was nominated as Secretary of the Department of the Interior to replace Ken Salazar. On March 4, President Obama nominated EPA’s Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation Gina McCarthy to head the Agency, replacing Lisa Jackson. In the same White House ceremony, MIT physicist Ernest Moniz was nominated for Secretary of the Department of Energy, to succeed Steven Chu.

Once confirmed, the decisions these three individuals make are certain to have an impact on Garfield County, where we feel the effects of energy production, air & water pollution, and climate change on a daily basis. It’s well worth our time to get to know the nominees.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold a confirmation hearing on Thursday, March 7, to consider REI Chief Executive Sally Jewell’s nomination to become the next Interior Secretary. The Dept. of Interior is responsible for management and conservation of federal land and natural resources. The DOI oversees the BLM which deals directly with oil and gas leasing on public lands, such as Thompson Divide and Roan Plateau.

With her strong environmental and recreational business background, Jewell’s confirmation is eagerly anticipated by those of us in the environmental coalition as we work to preserve and protect federal lands from increased oil and gas drilling. The outdoor recreation industry is big business in this country. Sally Jewell recognizes the importance of preserving public lands for outdoor recreation as a means of boosting local economies and protecting our environment.

And this just in from High Country NewsCan Sally Jewell interest a new generation in public lands?

Two weeks ago, the top Republican on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) threatened to slow Jewell’s nomination process over the issue of a King Cove land exchange which requires Interior Dept. approval. However the Senator met with Jewell last week to voice her concerns and no doubt will drill her with questions when she appears before the Committee this week:  Lisa Murkowski, Sally Jewell Meet After Senator Threatened To Hold Up Nomination Of Obama Pick.

Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) said he plans to ask Jewell about coal royalties, forest management, and energy development, as well as other topics:  Interior nominee in the hot seat as EPA, Energy picks loom.

The Committee hearing will begin at 10:00 a.m. EST (8:00 a.m MT), Thursday, March 7. Click here for more information about the hearing and a link to the live webcast.
