Breaking News: Midnight Massacre in Silt

At Monday night’s Board Meeting (4/26), after Mayor Moore and Trustees Rick Aluise, Paul Taylor, and Bryan Fleming were sworn in, the fireworks began.

Trustee Rick Aluise was appointed Mayor Pro-Tem. During Board comments Mayor Pro-Tem Aluise made a motion to address the town’s budget deficit by eliminating the positions of Community Development Director and the Planning Technician, and reducing the full time positions of Deputy Town Clerk and Police Clerk to half time positions.

The motion was seconded and after much discussion carried by a vote of 5 to 2. Nicky Leigh and Sonny Fernandez voted against the motion.

After the fact Town Attorney Gene Duran gave his opinion that since the motion was based on a budgetary decision, the Silt Home Rule Charter required a resolution. Board members agreed to bring forth a resolution on the motion at the next meeting.

At approximately 11:55 p.m. the matter of the Town Attorney Gene Duran’s contract and Town Administrator Betsy Suerth’s contract was brought to the floor. Both contracts have expired. A motion was made by Nicky Leigh to extend their contracts but the motion failed for lack of a second.

A motion was then made by Mayor Pro-Tem Rick Aluise to not renew the Town Attorney’s contract and seek the services of an attorney by contract. In the interim Attorney Walt Brown will be asked to serve at a rate of $200/hour, not to exceed 4 hours per week for a basic services, or 6 hours per month for extra legal matters.
