Cross Country Skiing is IN Again

For some of us it was never OUT. Nonetheless, more and more people are either discovering or re-discovering “skinny” skiing. Perhaps it’s the bad economy, or the high cost of Alpine skiing, or the return of the Winter Olympics – or maybe it’s a combination of all of the above. Whatever the reason, the sport of Nordic skiing is resurging in popularity this year.

As the new managers of the West Elk Multi-Use Club, Tod and I are out on the West Elk trails every weekend. And we are seeing more cross country skiers than ever before. In fact, the numbers might even double last year’s.

The West Slope is a haven for avid cross country skiers. We’re even starting to get organized with more clubs and activities cropping up.

WEMUC member Bruce Kime is offering free-to-the-public Outdoor Education Workshops in February. Skis and snowshoes are not required. Click on the link for more information.

The Grand Mesa Nordic Council is the granddaddy of regional cross country ski clubs. Their website contains maps and information on Grand Mesa ski trails, plus all things Nordic skiing from equipment to lessons to racing. A great resource!
